The material ‘graphene’ since officially discovered and named in 2004 as individual 2-D sheets of graphite, is anticipated to change the way we live forever. This incredibly agile supermaterial has provided the ability to progress nanotechnology with more conductive properties than copper and at a consistency that is 200 times stronger than steel.
What is truly incredible though is the density of graphene; graphene is one million times thinner than the diameter of a single human hair. “It would take an elephant, balanced on a pencil, to break through a sheet of graphene the thickness of Saran wrap,” according to researchers at Columbia University’s Fu Foundation School of Engineering. With its seemingly impossible strength and lightweight properties, scientists believe that the potential for this miracle material can literally be endless.
Theoretical Physics Professor Kaku of CUNY Graduate Center even believes that graphene may just be the answer to the gradual destruction of Moore’s Law that scientists have been on a decades long search for. To keep it short and sweet, Moore’s Law explains a prediction made in 1965 by Intel-cofounder Gordon Moore about the progression of technology and the modern digital revolution. Moore predicted that with every passing couple of years, twice as many transistors could fit onto a computing chip. Although Moore’s predictions have been correct for the last 50 years, in 2016 the law was no more.
According to technologyreview.com “a technology roadmap for Moore’s Law maintained by an industry group (ITRS), which includes the world’s largest chip makers, was recently scrapped. Intel had suggested silicon transistors can only keep shrinking for another five years.” Cue graphene. As mentioned previously, graphene’s structural and conductive characteristics are anticipated by Dr. Michio Kaku and many others to be the solution for scientists to achieve increasingly smaller sized chips with more power that will not affect the temperature of the technology.
You might be thinking laptops or PCs when you think of computing chips but think bigger; think massive aircraft carriers, planes and, satellites. Again Dr. Kaku; “Potential applications for the material include the replacing of carbon fibers in composite materials to eventually aid in the production of lighter aircraft and satellites; replacing silicon in transistors; embedding the material in plastics to enable them to conduct electricity; graphene-based sensors could sniff out dangerous molecules; increasing the efficiency of electric batteries by use of graphene powder.”
Among the list of technology waiting to be revolutionized by graphene are cellphone charging capabilities, touchscreens, LCD’s, OLED’s, artificial membranes, sound production, sports equipment, medical implants, safer water consumption, lighter plastics, stronger wind turbines and more.
From the looks of what graphene has already done for industry and the endless capabilities that are in store for the future, it is safe to say that this material will be wildly helpful in all markets that deal with the progression of technology.
