Coronavirus (COVID-19) tests have been at the forefront of many peoples minds as global industries struggle to realign in the wake of the ensuing pandemic. One of the greatest challenges in combating the novel coronavirus – more accurately classified as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2, or SARS-CoV-2 – is screening those with flu-like symptoms to determine if they actually have the virus. This is made more difficult by global shortages of testing apparatus and constricted supply chains.
Businesses around the world are leveraging their unique expertise to combat different aspects of the pandemic, from the economic impacts to the actual shortage of COVID-19 tests. At Grolltex, we have begun exploring the use of graphene sensors in novel testing kits for coronavirus.
Graphene is the ideal material for cutting-edge biosensors, whether as a lightweight substrate or a highly-functional active sensing element. Research has already shown the inordinate potential of graphene sensors in various bio applications. Using electrochemical signal processing, graphene sensors can rapidly detect a range of biomolecules including bioindicators as small as molecule-protein receptor interactions. This has yielded promising results in the detection of viruses like Zika. These same principles can be exploited in the fight against coronavirus.

At Grolltex, we are supplying the monolayer graphene for research into a convenient and cost-effective COVID-19 test that could significantly ease the strain on healthcare systems struggling to meet testing demands. In partnership with La Jolla’s Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute, we are exploring a flexible viral testing platform that could offer rapid COVID-19 detection. This micro-fluidically plumbed graphene sensor only requires a very small volume of sample material and can perform multiple viral tests synchronously.
